At the heart of his success lies a singular belief: his students are his strength. Dheeraj often says that his greatest accomplishment is not his own artistic journey, but seeing his students excel, preserve, and carry forward the rich tradition of Chenda. It is their dedication and passion that fuel his mission to impart this art form in the most authentic way possible. The support of his senior students, many of whom are accomplished artists in their own right, has played a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of Chenda artists in Kalavadhyam. Additionally, the unwavering involvement and encouragement from his family—who have supported his dream from the very beginning—has been a constant pillar of strength.

Kalavadhyam Dheeraj Edat is not just an artist but a mentor, teacher, and guardian of tradition and culture. As one of the most respected Chenda faculties (Aashan) in Bengaluru, he has trained over 800 students in the art of Chenda. But his role goes beyond merely teaching. Dheeraj ensures his most dedicated disciples are given numerous platforms to perform and establish themselves as renowned artists. His story is not one of self-glory but a testament to the love and determination he has for seeing his students surpass him—providing them opportunities and encouraging them to reach heights he could only dream of. This deep-rooted passion to empower others is what truly defines his legacy. Through Kalavadhyam Academy, Dheeraj Edat has ensured the legacy of Chenda continues to live on. The art form, now evolving through the next generation of artists, is no longer confined to Kerala. Dheeraj’s journey—marked by struggles, sacrifice, and triumph—is not just a personal achievement, but a shared journey with every student who walks through the doors of his academy. His story is one of devotion: devotion to his guru, to his students, and to the sacred art form of Chenda. It is a story of an artist who once struggled to be recognized, but whose relentless dedication transformed him into a beacon of hope for future generations. It is a story of a guru who still struggles for his students to be recognized.

The Early Years: A Dream Takes Root

Born into the cultural heart of Kerala’s Thrissur district, Dheeraj Edat was originally named Madhavankutty by his grandmother. He was born to parents Edat Radhakrishnan, a Central Government employee, and Eraath Jayasree, a homemaker. At the time of his birth, his father was stationed in Jammu & Kashmir, and the family had to face the challenges of a transient lifestyle. Seeking stability for his son’s education, Radhakrishnan applied for a permanent transfer to Bengaluru, Karnataka. Dheeraj’s mother played an equally pivotal role in shaping his early years, nurturing the creativity and curiosity that would define his later life.

It was in Thrissur during the summer vacation that Dheeraj’s bond with the rhythmic pulse of Chenda began to form. The powerful beats of the traditional temple festivals reverberated through his soul, igniting a passion that would lead him to pursue this art form. Despite having no prior artistic influence within his family, Dheeraj became the first in his family to embrace the Chenda, embarking on a path that would ultimately redefine his life and career. His journey began along with his uncle, Jayakumar, a chenda enthusiast where both of them started learning under the tutelage of the legendary Peruvanam Sankaranarayanan Marar.

Dheeraj’s formal training in Chenda Melam started under the mentorship of Mohanna Marar and Rajesh Marar, but it was Peruvanam Sankaranarayanan Marar who truly refined his skills. Alongside his studies in Chenda, he also learned Thimila under the guidance of Trikkur Rajan Marar, expanding his proficiency in the traditional percussion arts. His learning was not a simple pursuit but a grueling process—spanning years of practice, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the art.

While his skills were growing, Dheeraj always harbored a dream to become an Ilathaalam artist. This desire led him to study Ilathaalam, Kombu, and Kurum Kuzhal. True mastery of any art form, Dheeraj believed, requires patience and deep respect for the process. He spent years waiting for the right moment to be promoted to perform the prestigious Uruttu Chenda. Until that time came, he continued to hone his craft as an Ilathaalam and Valam Thala artist with respect, devotion and dedication.

A New Chapter: The Birth of Kalavadhyam Academy

Dheeraj, a post graduate in MBA and even after settling in Bengaluru, working for a private company, Dheeraj’s unwavering passion for Chenda never faltered. While navigating the demands of his professional life, his commitment to preserving this ancient art form outside of Kerala remained his guiding force. During this time, Dheeraj conceived a bold vision—to establish his own academy, Kalavadhyam Academy for Arts & Cultures. His dream was far-reaching: not just to teach students the classical rhythms of Chenda, but to provide them with a deeper understanding of Indian culture and tradition. Dheeraj was resolute in his mission to create a space where the rich art forms of Kerala could continue to thrive, grow, and inspire future generations.

Driven by determination and fueled by the unshakable support of his family, Dheeraj took the leap and founded Kalavadhyam Academy. He envisioned it not merely as a place for learning but as a dynamic hub where students would immerse themselves in the culture, engage with the rhythms of tradition, and evolve into skilled, accomplished artists. Dheeraj’s commitment to both the art and the people he taught resonated deeply within the academy’s foundation.

One of the most significant moments of encouragement came from his aashan, the revered Shri Peruvanam Sankaranarayanan Marar, whose guidance and support helped validate Dheeraj's aspirations. With his guru’s and his parent's blessings, Dheeraj’s dream began to take shape. He always belived in Matha Pitha Guru Dhaivam. As Peruvanam Sanakranrayanan Marar was the one who shaped his art form. Dheeraj decided to keep himself loyal to his guru till his last breathe.

As Kalavadhyam Academy grew, it became more than just an academy—it evolved into a vibrant cultural institution and more over a family of arts. The rapid success of the academy reflected Dheeraj’s unwavering vision and dedication to preserving the art form, while simultaneously nurturing a new generation of Chenda musicians. His journey, powered by passion, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility, laid the groundwork for the academy’s lasting impact on both the students and the cultural community.

The Birth of Kalavadhyam: A Journey Through Rejection and Resilience

In 2010, fueled by a burning passion and an unwavering vision, Dheeraj Edat took his first steps toward creating something that would preserve and promote the timeless tradition of Chenda. With boundless determination, he founded Kalavadhyam Chenda Kalari in Bengaluru, a dream he nurtured for years. But the road ahead was far from easy, and the path to success was littered with rejections, skepticism, and challenges that would test his very spirit.

When Dheeraj first announced his initiative, he was met with doubts from almost every corner. Fellow artists questioned his abilities, dismissing him as an idealist with no understanding of the realities of the modern world. Some ridiculed his dream, while others, including close friends and family, expressed concern that in an age dominated by technology and changing tastes, his efforts would amount to nothing. These voices of doubt echoed in his mind, but Dheeraj refused to let them extinguish the fire within him.

His first Chenda class began with only three students, a small, fragile beginning that barely held the weight of his aspirations. But even this humble start came with its own set of struggles. With no proper venue and no resources, Dheeraj was forced to conduct classes in an open field near Malleshpalya, Bengaluru, enduring the blistering heat of the sun day after day. Despite the discomfort, he held onto hope, believing that his vision would eventually take root. But, as reality set in, his optimism began to waver. Within weeks, those three students lost interest. The bond he had hoped to form, the rhythm he had wished to build, slipped through his fingers as they walked away. He was left standing in an empty field, the weight of failure pressing heavily on his heart. His dream, which once seemed so alive, now appeared to be slipping away.

In the months that followed, Dheeraj relentlessly searched for a permanent space where he could continue his classes. But each attempt was met with rejection. Doors were slammed in his face, and every new location seemed to offer only more obstacles. The world seemed determined to crush his dream, but Dheeraj refused to let it die. With each rejection, his heart grew heavier, yet his resolve hardened. He had come too far, sacrificed too much, to give up now.

It wasn’t just about teaching students or creating an academy; it was about preserving a sacred tradition, a piece of Kerala's soul, and sharing it with the world. Despite the overwhelming rejections, the doubts, and the loneliness, he never stopped believing. His resilience became his greatest ally, and his unwavering commitment to the art form carried him through the toughest times. Dheeraj’s dream of Kalavadhyam Academy was not just about the art of Chenda—it was about the fight for something greater than himself. A fight that would see him through rejection after rejection, and into a future where his vision would finally come to life.

A Ray of Hope: The Onam That Changed Everything

In 2012, the Onam festival marked a pivotal moment in Dheeraj's life, a moment that would change his future in ways he never imagined. An aunt from his family friend circle Thankamma, invited him to perform at their samajam's Onam celebrations, and without

any hesitation, Dheeraj agreed. It was at this event that he crossed paths with Anup, a singer and Public Relations Officer at a residential school, outskirts of city in Bengaluru. Anup, impressed by Dheeraj's passion and commitment, saw potential in him and made a suggestion. He asked if Dheeraj would be willing to teach Chenda, a traditional percussion instrument, to him and a few of his friends.

What seemed like a simple request turned into the breakthrough Dheeraj had been waiting for. A week later, Anup confirmed that four individuals were eager to learn, and thus, Dheeraj began his first set of classes. The sessions were hosted at Ashok’s home in Vidyaranyapura, marking the beginning of what would soon become a turning point in Dheeraj’s life.

Unfortunately, the newfound hope was short-lived. Just a month after the classes started, unforeseen personal and external circumstances forced them to come to a halt. The lack of a stable location for the classes and the mounting pressures from his personal life began to take their toll on Dheeraj. He was also juggling his Working Professionals MBA studies at Amity University in Koramangala, which made it increasingly difficult to find balance. Despite the setbacks, this fleeting opportunity gave Dheeraj something invaluable: the realization that the pursuit of his passion, however challenging, had the potential to carve out a new path for him.

Though the classes ended prematurely, that one encounter with Anup would leave an indelible mark on Dheeraj, igniting a spark of hope for a future he hadn't yet fully envisioned.

The Toughest Blow: A Father’s Illness and the Sacrifices Made

Just as Dheeraj was trying to balance his dreams with the weight of responsibility, tragedy struck in the form of his father’s severe heart attack. The news was a blow he wasn’t prepared for. The hospital bills quickly piled up, and the financial strain Dheeraj became unbearable. As if the medical crisis wasn’t enough, some of Dheeraj’s relatives, didn’t hesitate to place blame on him. They accused him of being irresponsible, of choosing the uncertain path of Chenda over a stable, conventional career. The guilt gnawed at Dheeraj, each word echoing in his mind as he watched his father fight for his life.

In the face of these overwhelming challenges, Dheeraj was consumed by worry. He didn’t know how he would manage the mounting expenses, nor could he shake the feeling that his pursuit of his passion had somehow led to this hardship. His uncles from Thrissur arrived at the hospital, their presence a reminder of the weight he carried. But in the midst of this turmoil, a glimmer of hope appeared through the kindness of his close friend Sajin & Sajith’s father - Solomon. Solomon, seeing Dheeraj’s distress, offered to help with the hospital bills. Solomon, a real estate businessman, had paid a significant advance for a property deal, but when he learned about the crisis, he canceled the deal and asked for the money back—money that would now go toward helping Dheeraj. With a heart full of gratitude and regret, Dheeraj assured Solomon that he would pay him back as soon as possible.

But despite this lifeline, Dheeraj found himself in a heart-wrenching dilemma. Sitting at his father’s bedside in the ICU, he made a painful promise. With his father’s weakened health, he vowed to quit his MBA and take a regular job, whatever it took, to support the family and make his father proud in future with his success. The dream he had cherished for so long—to further his education—now seemed a distant fantasy. His father had always wanted him to achieve something great, to rise above, but now Dheeraj felt as though he was falling short. His heart was heavy with the weight of that promise, knowing his own dreams had to be sacrificed for the sake of his family’s future.

Determined to live up to his commitment, Dheeraj attended 43 job interviews. Each rejection added to his sense of defeat. But when the rejections became too much, a distant family connection helped him secure a job—albeit as a Food and Beverage staff member in an MNC. It wasn’t glamorous, and it wasn’t what he had envisioned for himself, but Dheeraj took the job without hesitation.

Each day, he worked tirelessly. He cleaned cafeteria tables, supervised dishwashing and canteen duties, and maintained the breakout areas. While doing this, he whispered to himself, “This is not what my father expected me to become.” He couldn't bring himself to tell his father about his new job, not wanting to burden him with the shame he felt. His father, with his prestigious office position, deserved to know that his son had achieved more. Dheeraj’s heart ached with every task he completed, feeling as though he had fallen far from the dreams he once had, and from the expectations his father had for him.

One day, as he worked in the cafeteria, Dheeraj saw someone who broke his heart further. It was his childhood friend - Puneeth, someone he had studied with for years, now working as a Finance Executive in the same company. His friend’s success felt like a sharp reminder of Dheeraj’s own perceived failure. Here he was, cleaning floors and tables, while his friend had made it into a promising position. The comparison crushed him, and for a moment, he questioned every decision he had made. But still, despite the ache in his chest, he held onto a glimmer of hope.

Dheeraj told himself, “One day, I will rise.” Each day, he reminded himself of this promise, even when it seemed impossible. He worked tirelessly from Monday to Saturday, putting in long hours at the MNC, and then rushed on Sundays to teach Chenda classes to his students. He was determined not to let go of the one thing that still brought him joy and purpose—the art of Chenda. Though he felt defeated at times, he knew that this was just a chapter in his story, and that one day, his hard work and sacrifices would pay off.

The pain of seeing his dreams deferred was sharp, but it was also a reminder of his resilience. In the quiet moments, when he was alone with his thoughts, he found strength in his father’s sacrifice and in the love he had for his family. No matter how humbling his position seemed, Dheeraj was determined to rise, to reclaim his dreams, and to honor the sacrifices he had made.

The First Breakthrough: The Journey Begins

Just as Dheeraj was starting to feel the weight of his struggles, a phone call from Anup brought a sudden wave of hope. Anup’s voice over the phone was full of excitement as he shared life-changing news: Global Residential School had agreed to introduce Chenda classes. The news felt like a dream come true, but it came with a significant challenge—the school was located 34 km away in Chintamani. For Dheeraj, that meant a daunting, long journey. But the spark of passion for Chenda in his heart was so strong that distance was never going to be an obstacle.

Each week, Dheeraj would strap his Chenda onto his back and set off early on his old Hero Passion Plus bike, covering over 60 km in a round trip just to teach. The long hours on the road were exhausting, but the thought of preserving and passing on the art form he loved kept him going. He would spend Monday to Saturday working for the company, and come Sunday morning, he would leave by 7 am to reach Chintamani for his classes, returning home by 6 pm. It was grueling, but it was also the start of something truly special.

As the months passed, Dheeraj’s relentless dedication bore fruit. By the end of the year, he had successfully trained 50 students. While he earned only Rs. 2000 per month, the rewards he gained were far beyond financial. The real joy came from watching his students grow, seeing the joy in their eyes as they learned the rhythms of Chenda and felt the heartbeat of this ancient tradition. The sense of fulfillment that came from knowing that he was helping keep this beautiful art alive was priceless.

However, just as Dheeraj’s dreams seemed to be blossoming, life unexpectedly knocked him down. While rushing to his office during the early morning shift at 6AM, he was involved in a severe bike accident at Karthik Nagar near Marathalli. The crash left him with painful leg fractures, split of toe joints and multiple other injuries. His toe had to have 11 stitches. The physical pain was unbearable, but the emotional toll was even greater. During his time in recovery, Dheeraj not only lost the ability to teach his beloved Chenda but also lost his job at the company due to long medical leaves. It felt like everything he had worked for had been stripped away in an instant.

The setback was crushing, and for a time, it felt as though all the progress he had made had been for nothing. Yet, in the quiet moments of pain and frustration, Dheeraj found something even more powerful than despair—resilience. His dreams, though momentarily delayed, were not shattered. The love he had for Chenda and the promise he had made to keep the art alive were stronger than ever. In the face of this setback, Dheeraj made a vow: he would rebuild. He would rise again. The journey was far from over, and with every beat of the Chenda, Dheeraj knew his story would continue, filled with hope, passion, and the unbreakable belief that every setback was just a stepping stone toward his ultimate goal.

Rising from the Ashes: Kalavadhyam’s Recognition

Dheeraj’s journey had never been easy, but with every setback, he found a new source of strength. Unshaken by the challenges life had thrown at him, Dheeraj joined a new company as an operations executive while continuing to teach Chenda in his spare time. His determination and passion for the art form never wavered. In 2015, his hard work finally began to pay off when Suvarna Karnataka Kerala Samajam (SKKS) offered him a space to conduct classes. This was a major turning point for Kalavadhyam, as it marked the beginning of the academy's formal existence.

Dheeraj’s first official batch included a group of eager students—Prabhath, Rajeev, Sijil, Joe, Alen, Sudheesh, Vishnu Menon, Hariharan, and Sandeep. These full time students became the foundation of Kalavadhyam. Over time, Hariharan and Vishnu Menon (Dheeraj's brother in law) grew to become senior artists at the academy, playing a crucial role in Kalavadhyam’s development. But even with this early success, challenges still loomed. A few months later, due to sound issues during practice, SKKS could no longer offer support, and the academy was forced to find a new venue. It was during this challenging period that the RN Branch was established at Kerala Samajam’s Jubilee College in NRI Layout with the help of his student - Alen, a crucial step in expanding Kalavadhyam’s reach.

By end of 2016, the academy was ready for its first major milestone: the arangettam of Dheeraj’s first batch. The performance took place at the Thiruvullakkavu Shri Dharmashatha Kshethram in Cherpu, Thrissur, and was a true testament to the hard work and dedication of both Dheeraj and his students. The arangettam was held under the mentorship of Kalavadhyam Dheeraj Edat's revered guru, Shri Peruvanam Sankaranarayanan Maraar, and was graced by Chenda legends like Peruvanam Kuttan Marar. This was a significant moment for Kalavadhyam and marked the official launch of the academy as a serious force in the Chenda community. The students, inspired by their success, decided to continue learning the professional levels of Chenda. In addition to the core Chenda classes, the academy expanded its offerings to include Ilathaalam and Edakka Sopana Sangeetham, enriching the students' experience.

By 2017, Kalavadhyam was continuing to grow. Abhilash, Girish, and Santhosh approached Dheeraj at the RN Branch with a request to open a new location in Vidyaranyapura. They had 13 students who had already learned and completed their arangettam under another teacher but were now looking for a new mentor. With Dheeraj’s experience and expertise, they wanted him to take on the responsibility of guiding them. This led to the opening of Kalavadhyam’s second branch in Vidyaranyapura, marking another milestone in the academy’s expansion. During the month of July 2017, Kalavadhyam was officialy registered as Kalavadhyam Academy For Arts and Culture.

The success of both branches culminated in 2017 during October, when Kalavadhyam hosted the largest Chenda arangettam ever held in Bengaluru, at the HAL Ayyappan Temple. The event featured 70 artists, making it the largest gathering of Chenda performers in Karnataka. The performance included some of the most renowned melam artists in the field, such as Peruvanam Sankaranarayanan Maraar, Kombath Anil Kumar, Kummath Nadanan, Vyloor Sukumaran, and Kummath Ramankutty. The event was a resounding success and silenced all the critics who had once doubted Dheeraj’s dream of preserving and promoting Chenda.

This monumental arangettam wasn’t just a performance—it was a historical achievement. Kalavadhyam became the first academy in Karnataka to perform a Chenda arangettam with more than 70 artists, setting a new benchmark for the Chenda community. From its humble beginnings to this grand success, Kalavadhyam’s journey was a testament to Dheeraj’s relentless hard work, his belief in the art form, and his unwavering commitment to his dream. The success of that arangettam cemented Kalavadhyam’s place in the history of Chenda and marked the beginning of even greater things to come.

A Legacy Cemented: From Bangalore to Thrissur

After the remarkable achievement of Kalavadhyam's arangettam, the journey of success continued to unfold in 2019. A new request came in to Dheeraj to start classes at Kumbalgodu, Mysore Road, for a batch of students who had completed their arangettam and were eager to continue their training. To ensure they received the right guidance, Dheeraj, alongside his Kurum Kuhzal colleague Prasad, visited the location and confirmed the launch of Kalavadhyam’s third branch—the MR Branch. This was another milestone in Kalavadhyam’s growth, a testament to Dheeraj’s dedication and commitment to spreading the art of Chenda.

That same year, Dheeraj received a call that would further elevate Kalavadhyam’s reputation. His guru, the legendary Peruvanam Sankaranarayanan Marar, invited Dheeraj’s students to perform at the prestigious Peruvanam Pooram. This was an incredible opportunity, and Dheeraj’s excitement knew no bounds. By 2019, his students were selected to perform at the Peruvanam Pooram, making Kalavadhyam the first academy from outside Kerala to receive this honor. This achievement marked a historic moment, solidifying Dheeraj’s place in the Chenda community.

In addition to this milestone, 2019 also witnessed another major event in Bengaluru. Kalavadhyam organized a grand arangettam spanning three days, with students from all three branches of Kalavadhyam coming together to showcase their skills. The event featured breathtaking performances, including the Panchari Melam Arangettam by three batches, the Kombu Pattu Arangettam by senior artists Ranganath and Jayakrishnan, the Kurum Kuzhal Pattu Arangettam by Rajesh TN (trained under Kombath Anil Kumar), and the Edakka Sopana Sangeetham Arangettam by Krishnan, Adithya, and Ramesh. The event was a true celebration of the academy's hard work, commitment, and the talent of its students.

However, as with any great journey, challenges emerged. When COVID-19 hit, Dheeraj was forced to halt physical classes and move to an online format. This time he had to loose his job which put him financially down. Despite the challenges, this shift allowed his senior students to continue perfecting their skills in Pandi Melam. Additionally, new online batches were created for students in Australia and around the world. Though the pandemic brought many obstacles, Dheeraj’s unwavering commitment to his students and the art form ensured that Kalavadhyam remained a beacon of hope and growth.

The year 2022 brought more significant achievements. Dheeraj received a call from the legend Kurum Kuzhal Artist Kombath Anil Kumar, informing him that his student, Rajesh TN, would have the opportunity to perform Kurum Kuzhal at the world-renowned Thrissur Pooram during the Kanimangalam Sahasthavu Ezhunallippu. This was a huge milestone, and Dheeraj shared the exciting news with his students and the Kalavadhyam family. Rajesh’s performance at Thrissur Pooram was a groundbreaking achievement, and it marked another chapter of Kalavadhyam’s ever-growing success. A non malayali artist who performed in the part of Thrissur pooram made it a big achievement for Dheeraj and Kalavadhyam

In December of 2022, Kalavadhyam organized Melothsavam 2022, a grand arangettam event that featured the first-ever Pandi Melam arangettam in Karnataka, setting a historical record. The event was a resounding success, with the senior students shining brightly in their performances. The grand finale of Melothsavam 2022 featured a breathtaking Panchari Melam by the legendary Peruvanam Satheesan Marar, with over 100 artists performing. The event became a moment of pride for every member of Kalavadhyam, showcasing the academy’s growth and the hard work of its students.

The success of Melothsavam 2022 was a testament to the passion, dedication, and perseverance of Dheeraj and his students. This victory led to the opening of Kalavadhyam’s fourth branch in Sarjapur Road in 2023, further expanding the academy’s reach and impact. Also 2023 made another Signification achivement that Kalavadhyam Academy For Arts and Cultures received the University Affilication for Chenda Courses through Sanchari Kala Parishad which made Kalavadhyam to become the only academy outside kerala to offer certification courses in Chenda. Dheeraj's student Mani Narayanan took this initiative which made a success to Kalavadhyam.

As the success continued to unfold, Kalavadhyam started gaining more recognition and invitations to perform at prestigious events across Kerala. Dheeraj and his students participated in renowned celebrations such as:

These prestigious invitations were a testament to the respect and recognition Kalavadhyam had earned in the Chenda community, both in Karnataka and Kerala. Each event further solidified Kalavadhyam's reputation as a beacon of excellence, driven by Dheeraj’s unrelenting passion and hard work.

Through dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to the art form, Dheeraj and Kalavadhyam have built a legacy that continues to inspire countless artists. What began as a humble dream has blossomed into an academy that stands tall, with a lasting impact on the Chenda tradition.

The Present: A Vision Realized

Today, Kalavadhyam stands as one of the most esteemed Chenda academies in the world, having successfully trained over 800 students. Dheeraj Edat, who once struggled to make ends meet by cleaning floors, now holds a respected role in a renowned IT organization, leading academic alliances. However, despite his personal success, his heart and soul remain firmly with Kalavadhyam—his true legacy. Dheeraj always envisioned that his students would surpass him, gain greater opportunities, and carry the legacy of Chenda far beyond his own achievements. After years of overcoming obstacles, his dream is no longer a distant vision but a tangible reality.

Dheeraj’s journey, marked by both struggle and triumph, is encapsulated in the words he shares with his students: “Always be patient. I am here with you and for you. Trust me, and I will guide you to your destination. All I ask is your devotion, dedication, respect, and passion for this art form. My greatest wish is for my students to shine brighter than I ever could and to carry Kalavadhyam to even greater heights.”

Throughout this journey, Dheeraj has been supported by his unwavering team—his pillars—who have stood by him in the mission to preserve and elevate the traditional art form of Chenda. Key figures like Ranganath, Anoop, Rajesh T N, Vishnu Menon, Subhash, Vishnu Venugopal, Sabarish G, Sabareesh P K, Rohith R, Sarath S Marar, Hariharan, Venkataraman, Laxminarayanan, Kushik, Pranav, Amogh, Praveesh, Libheesh, Sujith, Rajesh Nambiar, Mani Narayanan, Presely, Krishnakumar Warrier and many others have all played integral roles in Kalavadhyam’s success, ensuring its growth and prominence.

However, as they say "Life is full of hurdles". In 2024, Dheeraj faced such a hurdle a

painful betrayal. Some of his students, whom he had trusted deeply and given countless opportunities, chose to leave Kalavadhyam. They made false claims about feeling pressured and unrecognized, despite the many chances Dheeraj had offered them to perform and grow. This betrayal, especially from his students he had worked so hard to mentor, was a devastating blow.

The Unwavering Support Behind Kalavadhyam’s Success

Despite the challenges and betrayals that Dheeraj faced, it was not the betrayal that defined his strength, but rather the steadfast support of his trusted team. His core group of “Pillars” rallied around him, providing the moral and professional support necessary to push forward. Among them, Ranganath M Pillai stood out as Dheeraj’s most trusted ally.

Kalavadhyam Ranganath has been more than just a student over the years; he has been a consistent moral support for Dheeraj Aashan for the past eight years. From student to artist, faculty member, and now a key leader, Ranganath has embraced equal responsibilities, particularly in the administrative management of the academy. His unwavering commitment has been a cornerstone for Kalavadhyam's progress.

Meanwhile, other key members of the team and his trust wothy students, such as Anoop, Rajesh T N, Vishnu Menon, and Laxminarayanan, were promoted as faculties and continued to lead their respective areas in Chenda, Ilathaalam, and Kurum Kuzhal. These individuals have been with Kalavadhyam from its early stages and through its most challenging times. Kalavadhyam Anoop has taken the initiative to lead the entire Ilathaalam team and personally teach new enrollments each year. Kalavadyam Rajesh TN, representing Kalavadhyam through Kurum Kuzhal, has played a vital role in major melam programs across Kerala. Kalavadhyam Vishnu Menon, who is not only a brother-in-law to Dheeraj but also a critical part of the team, has taken the lead in managing the Valam Thala team. Kalavadhyam Laxminarayanan, the youngest melam pramani at Kalavadhyam, has actively worked on developing the next generation of artists, including young talents such as Kushik, Pranav, Amogh, Dhruv, Yadhukrishnan, Srinandh, and Atharv.

The senior team at the MR branch, including Praveesh, Sujith, Libheesh, and Sabareesh, have been instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of classes at that MR location. Rohith, Subhash, Sabarish, and Hariharan also took on leadership roles across various other locations.

Beyond An Academy - The Bond & Unity

Kalavadhyam has always been more than just a family or a team – it is a bond that transcends simple collaboration. It is a place where everyone who has dedicated themselves to this art form moves forward together, not only celebrating success but also standing united during times of challenge and adversity.

With each challenge, Dheeraj’s determination grew stronger. His singular goal became clearer: "My students should become well-recognized artists, and for that, I will go to any length and make any sacrifice." His dedication to his students and the art form remains resolute. He continues to believe that if his students remain loyal to their craft, their guru, and their dreams, they too can reach heights beyond imagination.

Being a student of Kalavadhyam is not easy, but it is a journey that demands resilience, loyalty, and sacrifice. Dheeraj’s story teaches his students to never give up, to confront obstacles head-on, to stay loyal to their guru, and to remain committed to their team. With dedication, hard work, and an unshakable belief in their dreams, they too can make their vision come true.

The Conclusion

As Kalavadhyam continues to grow, its legacy strengthens with each passing year. The sacrifices, struggles, and countless hours spent nurturing talent will never go in vain. Kalavadhyam is more than just an academy—it is a living testament to what is possible when passion, dedication, and love for the art form are at its core. With each new student who walks through its doors, the legacy of Kalavadhyam shines brighter than ever before.

The journey Dheeraj began in 2010, despite numerous failures, now stands as a resounding success that marks the 15th anniversary of Kalavadhyam Academy. Had he given up during his darkest moments, you would not be reading this story today. And if you are a student, you would not have the privilege of learning from an Aashan who has imparted invaluable knowledge about these art forms, traditions, and, most importantly, life lessons. The key lesson Dheeraj has always emphasized is this: "Be a good person. Assess every situation, remain loyal to everyone, and do things before it’s too late. Sacrifice for those who are by your side."

I am Rathish P Nair, a former student of Kalavadhyam Dheeraj Aashan who joined Kalavadhyam in 2011 to learn Chenda. The struggles, passion, and dedication that went unnoticed deserve to be shared. This article is not for my personal blog but for Kalavadhyam’s website, because it tells a story meant for all students—of any discipline—who are working toward their dreams. This story is a tribute to the one who taught me that fame and power is insignificant, but humanity is everything.

Now Kalavadhyam is an academy with

  • 123 Artists including professionals

  • 4 Class Locations in Bengaluru

  • 8 Faculties & 1 Visiting faculty

  • 5 Guest Faculties from Thrissur & Palakkad

  • University Recognition

  • Participation in major melam programs in Thrissur

  • 12 Professional Courses

  • Classes conducted for Chenda Melam, Thayambaka, Panchavadhyam, Edakka, Sopana Sangeetam, Kurum Kuzhal, Kombu Pattu, Ilathaalam and Bharatanatyam

And so, Kalavadhyam Dheeraj Edat’s vision has not only been fulfilled—it has become a beacon of hope, inspiration, and success for generations to come. The journey continues, and with it, a future brimming with even greater triumphs and opportunities for those who dare to dream.

Thanks Rathish ji for this wonderful narration of the journey of Aashaan thus far . This narration makes us understand the pain, sincerity that has been put to build this beautiful platform that has provided us with learning of this beautiful artform. I sincerely bow down to the passion and hardwork put by Aashaan for giving us this platform and helped people like us in bangalore to be able to learn this as traditionally as possible.
